How To: Fix “Windows Sidebar Is Managed By Your System Administrator” Error in Windows Vista

When you try to open the Windows Sidebar in your Windows Vista computer system, sometimes you got the following error message, and the Sidebar does not open:

“Windows Sidebar is managed by your system administrator.

If your Windows Vista is giving you this error and you are in fact the system administrator this fix may resolve the issue.

Method 1:

By a simple Windows Vista Registry Tweak you can easily fix this issue.The steps for the registry tweak is given:

  • Click on Windows Vista Start, type regedit.exe into the search field and press ENTER
  • This will open the Windows registry editor and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Windows \ Sidebar

  • In the right-pane, delete the value named TurnOffSidebar (if found)
  • Repeat the same in the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Windows \ Sidebar

  • Exit Windows Vista Registry Editor.
  • Run the program sidebar.exe again.

Method 2:

If you are using an edition of Windows Vista (Windows Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate editions) which includes the Group Policy Editor, follow these steps to remove the Turn off Windows Side bar Policy:

  • Click on Windows Vista Start, type gpedit.msc in the Search box, and press ENTER
  • This will open’s the Windows Group Policy Editor and navigate to the following branch:

Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Sidebar

  • Double-click Turn off Windows Sidebar
  • Set it as Not Configured
  • Repeat the same in the following branch:

User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Sidebar

  • Close the Group Policy Editor window.

NB: If Turn off Windows Side bar Policy already set to Not Configured on your computer, set it to Enabled and click Apply. Then repeat the steps and revert the setting back to Not Configured. This removes the registry based policy if set already.
