How To: Fix Desktop.ini Pop Up During Windows 7 Startup
Symptoms:
You may have noticed that a Notepad window will automatically open upon every system startup or reboot in Windows 7.This opened Notepad window will open desktop.ini with the following text:
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787
Causes:
This is a bug in Microsofts new generation operating system Windows 7, that desktop.ini file been mistakenly been placed or created on the Windows startup folder. To fix for this Windows 7 desktop.ini startup bug, just delete or remove the desktop.ini from the Windows startup folder, which loads on every boot up.
Resolution:
To fix the bug,desktop.ini opens in notepad on every boot in Windows 7, do any of the following methods:
Method 1:
- Click on the Windows 7 Start button, click All Programs, and right-click the Startup sub menu.
- From the context menu that appears, select Explore.This will bring up a Windows Explorer window showing the shortcuts that make up the menu items, as well as desktop.ini.
- Right-click desktop.ini, choose Properties from the menu, check the Hidden box, and click OK.
- Close the Windows Explorer window.
- Now repeat the process, but upon right-clicking Startup choose Explore All Users instead.
Method 2:
- Under Folder Options -> View , select “Show hidden files, folders and drives” and un-check “Hide protected operating system files” so that you can see the hidden desktop.ini files.
- Open the Windows 7 start orb and at the search type: shell:startup and press Enter.
- The start menu startup folder will open, where you will find a desktop.ini file.Delete it.
- Open the start orb and at the search type: shell:common startup and press Enter.
- The “all users” start menu startup folder will open, where you will find a desktop.ini file. Delete it too.
- Done.Reboot your Windows 7 computer and the desktop.ini will not appear again.
Method 3:
- Under Folder Options -> View , select “Show hidden files, folders and drives” and un-check “Hide protected operating system files” so that you can see the hidden desktop.ini files.
- Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
- Delete desktop.ini
- Also navigate to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
- Delete desktop.ini if present.
- Done.Reboot your Windows 7 computer and the desktop.ini will not appear again.
