How To: Keep My Passwords From Expiring In Windows Vista
To increase security, Windows Vista may ask you to periodically change your password. Some users are reporting that Windows Vista is telling them that their password is expired or is about to expire, even though that have not set any password expiration policies. This annoying problem will keep re-occurring until you change your account profile in Windows Vista to prevent password expiration. If your Windows Vista computer is part of a network that has these types of rules set by a network administrator, then there is nothing you can do to keep Windows from expiring your password. But if you have control of your system, it’s pretty easy to set things up so that you don’t have to keep changing your password.
Method 1:
Go to the Start menu and enter lusrmgr.msc in the Search box if you are in Windows Vista( for Windows XP users, go to Start -> Run and enter lusrmgr.msc). Select the Users tab on the left, and then select your user from the right side of the screen by doubling clicking on it. This will open the properties dialog for your user. In the General tab there is a box labeled “Password never expires“. If you check this box, you won’t need to keep changing your password, you’ll be able to keep the same password forever.
Method 2:
Go to Windows Vista Start / All Programs /Accessories. Right click Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator” from the menu. Click Continue on the UAC(User Account Control) prompt. When the elevated command window opens, type following command. (or copy / paste the following line)
net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited
Press ENTER to continue. You should see the message “The command completed successfully“.Exit the command prompt. This will reset the passwords for all accounts on the system to not expire.
Method 3:
- Go to Windows Vista start menu search box and type control userpasswords2
- Select the Advanced tab in the User Accounts window
- Press the Advanced button below the Advanced user management header
- Select Users in the Local Users and Groups
- In the right pane, right-click the user name for which you want to change the setting, and select Properties
- On the General tab, check Password never expires
- Click Apply and OK.
