How To: Set Password For The Guest Account In Windows XP
Windows XP contains a guest account (turned off by default in Windows XP Pro) that has the rather unique distinction of not having a password. Not only does the account not have a password, you can’t even set one. As you can see, if this account is active, it presents a slight security risk. So, in order to protect your system and ensure that not just anybody can connect to your file or folder shares- even when using Simple File Sharing- you need to assign a password to the Guest account. Because Windows XP offers no “easy” point and click solution to help you, you will have to use any of the following methods:
Method 1:
- Log on to this computer with an Administrator account and turn on the guest account.
- Click Start->Run->Type cmd and click OK.
- Input the following command and press Enter.
Net user guest password
- Go to Control Panel->User Accounts.
- Click the Guest account and now you can change the password.
Method 2:
- Log on to this computer with an Administrator account and turn on the guest account.
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.
- Select the “Users” folder under “Local Users and Groups”.
- Right click on the “Guest” account and click “Set Password”.
- When a dialog comes up warning you of the possible consequences click “Proceed”.
- You will then be given a dialog that lets you set a new password.
