Print from any computer at any location wireless using Google cloud print

Printing is one of our everyday needs! Quite often we come across a printing job and ever wondered or thought about “printing” from a computer without actually connecting the printer to that computer ? Confused? huh! The idea is simple – you execute print command from a computer (to which the printer is not connected via wired or wireless technology!) and still you get the document printed! I know you are like “what the hell” now. Here introduces Google Cloud Print – a simple technology which enables you to do the same.

In this article I am not explaining the technical setup of Google cloud print because Google has done a great job explaining it here:- How Google Cloud print works

To use Google cloud print – at first – you need a Google account. So start one soon, if you dont have one. In most cases printers are not used for portable purposes – they are usually placed at your home/office. I assume you have one printer at office and one at home. And I also assume you have a permanent computer (desktop or notebook – that doesn’t matter) near both of your printer. The basic idea is you need one computer to install “Google cloud print application”.

Lets take the case of office alone. Connect your computer to printer and login to your Google account. Reach the Google cloud print website using the URL given above and click “Try It”. Now Google will install “Google cloud print” application in your computer. Now you have to setup Google cloud print application.

Note:- You must connect your printer now (before setting up). Now add your printer to Google cloud print. Okay – you are done.  After setting up log out of your Google account from this computer and leave everything as such (I mean leave the computer turned on with the printer connected to it).

Now you may go on to some other computer or a notebook – login to your Google account – reach Google docs. Upload some kind of document from your hard disk to Google docs – open it in google docs and click “print”. Now you will see an option to “select printers” . You select the option “Print with Google cloud print”.

Since you have added your office printer to Google cloud print (using your google account), they keep the record of all printers you have added in their database. And you heard it right – you can add any number of printers at any number of locations.  Okay – now select your office printer and click the “PRINT” command.  Can you see it? You executed it from a different computer and you got it printed through your office printer. That’s all about it!

Well, this is no “rocket technology”! Its a very simple mechanism. You transfer the print command and the file to print from computer A to Computer B via the internet  and hence from computer B to the printer and thus gets it printed.

How to make the maximum of Google cloud print?

Consider the case of an office with 100 desktop computers and 10 printers available. If 10 printers are connected to 10 computers (with Google cloud print installed), the remaining 90 computers can access these 10 printers – with making use of  Google cloud print. That makes possible fast, easy and hassle free printing for every 100 employees of that office.

Also you can share printers with your buddies – so that some buddy of yours in USA can get a print for you in India!  Give it a try!
